Before we get started, you would send me the first 15 pages or two chapters of your manuscript, as well as what you’re looking for in my edit. The trial editing period lasts two weeks, although this can be flexible to a certain extent to meet your scheduling needs. During this time I will assess the state of your manuscript, get a feel for your voice and story, and determine my review and editing speed. At the end of the two weeks, we will set up a meeting to discuss which avenue would be best for you. I set my rates based on the kind of edit desired, because understanding exactly what you are looking for will help me set an accurate pricing estimate and timeline for my work.
Copy Editing | $25-$35 per hour
The hourly rate for copy editing will be determined based on the state of your manuscript. Pieces that require more attention to grammar, spelling, and punctuation will fall on the higher end, while manuscripts in fairly good shape will be on the lower. Outside of pointing out glaring structural problems, this is a purely superficial edit.
Substantive Editing | $35-$50 per hour
A developmental edit, this option won’t focus much on grammar or spelling. Instead, I will take a more in-depth look at the story itself and structural issues, providing notes and comments as may be helpful.
Based on a schedule we set with each other, I will send periodic updates on my progress with an attached invoice, to be paid within four business days of receipt.
If you’d like to send me a few pages of your manuscript or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me.
Book Layout + Text Corrections | $20-$40 per hour
If you’re looking to have an in-book copy edit or layout done for your book/zine/chapbook, I’ll provide that service at a lower cost than the Creative Cloud subscription. I work both by hand and in InDesign, and will keep in close contact so that you receive the layout that is best for you while ironing out any edits that may have been missed before and after typesetting.
I am available for rush edits on work that requires a quick turnover. These are subject to a $200 rush fee on top of the hourly rate.
